News: Welcome to the Bipolar Awareness forum for Women.

Research shows that women tend to experience more periods of depression than men. Women are more likely to develop bipolar II disorder -- meaning they never develop severe mania, but instead have milder episodes of hypomania that alternate with depression.

Women are also at higher risk for rapid cycling, which means having four or more episodes in one year. Varying levels of sex hormones and activity of the thyroid gland in the neck -- together with the tendency to be prescribed antidepressants -- may contribute to rapid cycling, researchers believe.

xx Just saying hello
April 10, 2008, 05:11:54 pm by lael8

My name is Lael.
I was diagnosed with bipolar II, with mixed state, auditory processing, and seasonal affective disorder, as well ADD.  Seven years ago I was also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder called agoraphobia and modified panic attacks.

I have a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in psychology, education, and advocacy with special emphasis on bipolar disorder.  I'm currently getting ready to start my PhD.  I had a professor tell me if I had a learning disability, I didn't belong in school...well he can now kiss my ass.

I am a good writer and a crappy editor.  My brain moves at light speed so I am unable to correct things before my brain changes them to look right   Smiley  I find great fulfillment in my writing.  I write for me, first, and others second.  That's the only way I can maintain authenticity.

I struggle with my mental health issues but I have come to a peaceful balance with everything.  I am medicated and have been for almost fourteen though I've only been stabilized with the right combination of meds and right doses for the past four years.  If you want to know more about me, I'm at myspace.com/livemental

This forum is a great thing!  Thanks for such a cool site MindlessKitty!

Hey, I'm Kassandra. I'm 19 years old. I was diagnosed with BDII rapid cycling at age 17. It was a relief to put a name on the (excuse my language) "hell" I have been going through since age 13. I was misdiagnosed with depression at age 13. Taking only the antidepressants made my BD worse. Angry

Most of my family has disowned me because of all the crap I put them through when I was younger. Sad

I am engaged to a wonderful man! He deals with my severe mood swings like they are nothing. He knows when to be there for me and when to leave me alone. Not too many people out there like him! I love him SO much. Smiley

I have had 10 episodes within the last 3 months. It has really taken a toll on my social and personal life. Cry

Cheesy I'm Leslie, almost 27 years old, and I'm a rapid cycler. As far as a term, I have yet to be told what I am, but I do know that I cycle so much it isn't funny..

Hope to make your acquaintances soon.
